We have engineering internships open for mechanical or electrical engineering students wanting real-life experience in the field of engineering with a focus on building performance. As a holistic engineering firm, we support our client’s building systems from planning to design to operations and maintenance. Whether it’s design engineering, facility condition assessments, commissioning, or data analytics, we are advocates for the health of our client’s facilities. The ideal internship candidate will be enthusiastic, teachable, and willing to collaborate.

Facility Performance Engineering Intern: 

  • Join a tight-knit team and be mentored by department
  • Contribute ideas and support to the service team
  • Will gain experience in:
    • Energy Audits
    • Commissioning MEP building assets
    • Facility Condition Assessments
  • Opportunities for travel to client sites + critical care environments

Qualifications:

  • In pursuit of a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVACR, or Architectural Engineering Major (specializing in Mechanical Building Systems)
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to adapt to various tasks assigned with the goal of expanding Mechanical/Architectural Engineering skills
  • Able to take direction and work in teams
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Desire to learn and apply new skills

Work Environment & Requirements:

  • Average 40-hour workweek
  • Greater Grand Rapids or Detroit Area, or ability to relocate
  • Hybrid Work Environment
    • Traditional office setting, 2 days per week (9am-5pm)
    • Virtual/Remote office setting, 3 days per week
  • Potential to continue the internship remotely with reduced hours during the school year

Within 1 Month: Onboarding & Foundational Learning – Understand Synergy’s Operations

  • OKR: Complete onboarding and safety training within the first week.
  • OKR: Review and demonstrate understanding of the 3 key building system types (HVAC, electrical, plumbing).
  • OKR: Shadow Facility Performance Engineer (FPE) team on 1 Commissioning Project – Assisting with functional performance tests.
  • OKR: Shadow Facility Performance Engineer (FPE) team on 1 FCA Project – Assisting with Facility Condition Assessment.
  • OKR: Shadow Facility Performance Engineer (FPE) team on 1 EA Project – Assisting with an Energy Audit Site Visit.

Within 2 Months: Skill Application & Independent Contribution

  • OKR: Independently, assist in building the front-end documents and checklist for a Commissioning project.
  • OKR: Independently, assist in at least 2 Facility Performance Engineer (FPE) team Site Visits (HVAC, Electrical, & Plumbing).
  • OKR: Independently assist in at least 1 Facility Condition Assessments (HVAC, Electrical, & Architectural).
  • OKR: Independently assist in at least 1 Energy Audit Site Visits (HVAC, Electrical, & Architectural).
  • OKR: Use Excel or Word to contribute to data entry, report formatting, or calculations on at least 2 projects.
  • OKR: Participate in weekly team meetings, offering at least 1 idea or observation per meeting related to process or system performance.
  • OKR: Receive positive performance feedback from mentor or supervisor in a formal midpoint review.

Within 3 Months: Advanced Involvement & Knowledge Demonstration

  • OKR: Clearing demonstrate understanding of a sequence of operation for a building automation system and draft functional performance test for.
  • OKR: Draft 1 technical report or summary of a Facility Condition Assessment, incorporating data interpretation and system insights.
  • OKR: Assist in the Data input phase for a Facility Condition Assessment and / or Energy Audit project.
  • OKR: Complete and present a Capstone summary on a key system analysis or performance issue observed during the internship.
  • OKR: Contribute to a process improvement or documentation initiative for the FPE department.
  • OKR: Receive positive performance feedback from mentor or supervisor in a formal final review.

Compensation

$18-20/hr
