What would people be surprised to know about you (skills or talents)? People are surprised that I’m one belt short of a black-belt. I did Tae-kwon-do during college.   If you could have coffee with one person, living or dead, who would it be and why? King David. He was a man after God’s own heart. He messed up a lot, was super passionate, yet was completely humble. I’d like to hang out with him and hear about his stories and his heart for God.   What TV show describes your life? A-Team. I love the concept of a team of misfits who face problems and work together to come up with a solution and a plan comes together.   If you could be king for a day, what would you change in the world? I would make community service be a requirement to renew your driver’s license. Maybe this would make people a bit kinder.   What are you happiest doing, when you're not working? Seeing Danelle and my kids happy when we’re all together. And of course, the dogs. When we’re all together and truly enjoying our time together, this makes me the happiest. And times when I’m out hunting or dog training and when I take the moment to reflect how great God is. That makes me pretty happy.   What would be your personal motto? All in. In everything, be all in. Whether it’s work, play, worship, relationships, that’s me. Be all in.

John’s Professional Experience

During his college years, John gained experience in the field working for contractors. He did everything from fabrication to installation to troubleshooting while completing his degree. A year after graduation, he worked at Matrix Consulting Engineers before joining Synergy with founder, Hans Nelson. As MEP Engineering Services Director, John’s primary role is to oversee Engineering Services Department operations and provide the design team with initial concepts, direction, and review for engineering projects.

Get to know John

When you were a child, what career did you dream about?
I wanted to be a dentist for a long time. I thought it would be easy work and get paid a lot. I decided to go into engineering during high school because I wanted to do something more technical and diverse.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
The best advice I’ve ever received was from my dad. He said, “Make sure you think first and know why you’re making your decisions.” It has helped me throughout me life to know why I was making my decisions.

What TV show describes your life?
Home Improvement. It’s basically my life. I mess up and I’ve got a bunch of boys running around (and a daughter). My wife, Kristen, holds it all together.

What would be your personal motto?
Be Fulfilled. Fulfilled, to me, means to be satisfied with the goals you set. But the fulfillment goes beyond that. Are you resting in what you know and believe in, not being anxious? Looking back at the end of the day, I want to be fulfilled in the things God wants me to do for those around me.

After graduating with a degree in HVAC Nick worked in designing and building cleanrooms. He joined Synergy in 2007 and has increased his knowledge in HVAC systems commissioning, mechanical engineering design, and plumbing design, especially in Healthcare facilities. Nick is Synergy’s Facility Engineering Service Group Leader.

Get to know Nick

What are you happiest doing, when you're not working?
In my woodshop, turning anything on the lathe, building something. It’s the space where I clear and refresh my mind.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
Don’t ever ask someone to do something that you won’t do yourself.

Flashback to when you were 10 years old. What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a Park Ranger at Yellowstone National Park.

What would be your personal motto?
Playing small does not serve God or the world. To me, this means if you’re going to do something do it as big and best as you can. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing basketball, play bigger, harder, faster. If I’m going to work on a commissioning project, I’m going to test absolutely everything I can test.

He moved to Florida in 2016 to head Synergy’s Design and Facility Performance Engineering services in the Tampa Bay region where he ensures buildings are achieving their optimal design capacity.

Get to know Darren

What would people be surprised to know about you (skills or talents)?
It surprises people that I went to space camp when I was 14 years old.

I wanted to be an astronaut. I’ve always loved space since I was little looking through the telescope that my grandpa built. He was definitely a non-degreed engineer. That man was brilliant.

I don’t have a motto. I guess I have more of an anti-motto. Life is always changing, we have to be flexible.

If you could have coffee with one person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
It would probably be Nicola Tesla. I would ask him about all the things he came up with, especially some of the technology we’re just figuring out now. Tesla was the most underappreciated mind of our time. He would give Albert Einstein a serious run for his money.

I would enjoy having coffee with Jim Harbaugh, head football coach for the University of Michigan. I’d like to chat with him about his philosophies and see what he’s like in real life.

If you could be king for a day, what would you change in the world?
Childhood illnesses. Nothing wrenches my gut more than seeing a sick child. These kids are just starting out in life. It’s tough to see them struggle.

What TV show describes your life?
Home Improvement. I’m just like Tim the Tool Man Taylor – I’ve always got a project going and I own a lot of tools. I’m always making some kind of furniture in my wood shop.

What would be your personal motto?
Be happy every day.

Probably watching movies with my family. We’re big movie buffs.

If you could have coffee with one person, living or dead, who would it be and why?

What would people be surprised to know about you (skills or talents)?
I love working with wood and remodeling, especially when I can use my miter saw. I used to run my own gutter company; hanging off roofs and installing gutters and running trucks to the next jobsite.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
My mother’s advice from when I was young, “Treat others as you would want to be treated.”

If you could be king for a day, what would you change in the world?
Education for our young people. We need to teach our kids more about what the real world and bring life-skills back to the classroom. Home education, balancing a checkbook, how to craft with wood, these are all important life skills that the youngest generation is not learning.

What would be your personal motto?
Always tell the truth. Use kind words. Keep your promises. Laugh a lot. Stay happy. And try new things.

Get to know Tannis

What are you happiest doing, when you're not working?
I am a major word nerd, so when I’m not working, I’m either writing or reading a book. I’m always reading at least 2 or 3 books at any given time.

What's the best advice you've ever received?
To celebrate the lasts. The firsts are always exciting and new, but it’s the lasts that make us catch our breath. When it’s my kid’s last concert, or last year in school, I hear my grandma telling me to celebrate the lasts. It’s so bittersweet.

If you could have coffee with one person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I would want to have coffee with Harriet Tubman. She was given nothing in this world and yet changed not only lives, but generations of people because she dared to do something greater than herself.

What would be your personal motto?
To know the value of your own voice. Each and every person is unique and special and we need to understand the importance of our own voice in the world, as well as valuing the voice of others, even when we don’t agree.

What's the best advice you've ever received? One of my husband’s quotes is, “Circumscribe your desires while keeping your passions in due balance.” This was really hard for me to take in at first because I want to do so much as I am an overachiever in everything that I do. Keeping those goals in mind and understanding my limitations with things helps me to keep them in a logical balance.   If you could have coffee with one person, living or dead, who would it be and why? I would want to have coffee with Albert Einstein and pick his brain and understand how he sees the world visually. How can he take things that are so complex and turn them into simplistic, easily relatable things. He had such a unique ability with space, time, and matter, and give a picture of how it works.   What are you happiest doing, when you're not working? Definitely spending time with my husband and 4 kids. I love finding ways to make my husband and kids laugh. I think I’m the comedic relief sometimes.
