Facility Performance Commissioning Technician – Intern

Location

This position will be centralized out of the Belmont, MI or Royal Oak, MI offices of Synergy.

Job Purpose

The FP Technician is a supporting role to a Systems Performance Project Engineer. The Intern will be trained to provide commissioning and engineering support to all disciplines (mechanical, electrical, etc.,).  He/She will be required to develop system specific installation and operation checklists, inspection reports, and testing protocols with direction from the Project Engineer.  This team member will also assist in the performance testing of building systems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Include, but not limited by the following:

General

  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by enforcing company procedures, procedures, and regulations;
  • Maintains project electronic files on file server;
  • Execute all duties and responsibilities with professionalism; clear communication (written and verbal) skills, accountability;
  • Learn company work processes
  • Develop a basic knowledge in system design and testing, including but not limited to; air systems, hydronic systems, HVAC equipment and controls, plumbing equipment and controls, electrical equipment and controls, and life safety systems;
  • Promotes and maintains professional collaboration with project team, including all engineering disciplines, equipment vendors, architects, contractors, construction manager and project client/owner;
  • Ability to be adept with various tasks assigned with the goal of expanding Cx knowledge;
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

 

Project Execution

  • Develop a basic knowledge in system design reviews and testing services, including but not limited to; air systems, hydronic systems, HVAC equipment and controls, plumbing equipment and controls, electrical equipment and controls, and life safety systems;
  • Aide in the development and implementation of the Cx plan;
  • Ability to be adept with various tasks assigned with the goal of supporting the project team to meet daily and weekly objectives.
  • Develop the ability to Interpret HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Construction Drawings.
  • Develop the ability to Interpret of technical specifications, equipment cutsheets & catalog data;
  • Develop the ability Prepare Field Energy Audit inspections worksheets
  • Develop the ability to prepare system specific installation and operation checklists, inspection reports, and testing protocols; conferring with Project Engineer;

 

Continuing Education & Professional Development

  • Develops a solid understanding of the main principles of MEP engineering and construction through Synergy Training Sessions and Vendor Training.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Experience or Education in the Architectural Engineering Design or Construction Industry or Student in Architectural Engineering, HVAC Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering Program at a University or College.
  • Requires strong analytical and mathematical skills, quick thinking, and a solid understanding of the main principles of engineering, construction, and architecture;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, and Excel;
  • Proficient in utilizing mobile devices in the field to collect and analyze data
  • Desire to perform inspections and testing (commissioning) of HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Systems.

Preferred

  • Associates degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology;
  • HVAC Equipment Service Technician
  • Electrical Journeyman or Apprentice
  • Technical understanding of Electrical Systems, HVAC Systems, and/or Plumbing Systems
  • Proficient in the interpretation of construction drawings, technical specifications, submittals, and equipment data sheets as it relates to HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Systems.

Other Considerations

  • Knowledge of the Commissioning Process ASHRAE Guidelines 0, 1, & 2
  • Knowledge of the Commissioning Process per FGI, http://www.fgiguidelines.org/
  • Understanding of the application of mechanical and plumbing building codes, NFPA, & Healthcare Design Standards & Guidelines (AIA, FGI);

Working Conditions:

  • Average 40 hour work week (10-20 hrs for Interns that are full-time students)
  • Walking job sites and inspecting systems as the projects require.
  • Must be able to travel anywhere in the US, typically not more than one week per month
  • Traditional office setting
  • Part Time Virtual/Remote office setting
    • Work from professional home office with video conferencing and online tools
    • Business like virtual communication and home office standards to be maintained
