Facility Performance Commissioning Technician – Intern

Location

This position will be centralized out of the Belmont, MI or Royal Oak, MI offices of Synergy.

Job Description

The Facility Performance Commissioning Technician (FPCT) is a supporting role to a Commissioning Engineer. The technician will be trained to provide commissioning and engineering support to all disciplines (mechanical, electrical, etc.,).  He/She will be required to develop system specific installation and operation checklists, inspection reports, and testing protocols with direction from the Facility Performance Commissioning Engineer. 

The FPCT will also assist in the performance testing of building systems.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Include, but not limited by the following:

Project Management & Administration

  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by enforcing company procedures, procedures, and regulations
  • Maintains project electronic files on file server
  • Maintains product and company reputation by complying with federal, state and local regulations
  • Execute all duties and responsibilities with professionalism; clear communication (written and verbal) skills, accountability
  • Learn company work processes to aide in the development and implementation of the Cx plan
  • Develop a Basic knowledge of system specific installation and operation checklists, inspection reports, and testing protocols; conferring with FPCE
  • Promotes and maintains professional collaboration with project team, including all engineering disciplines, equipment vendors, architects, contractors, construction manager and project client/owner
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Project Execution

  • Develop a basic knowledge in system design reviews and testing services, including but not limited to; air systems, hydronic systems, HVAC equipment and controls, plumbing equipment and controls, electrical equipment and controls, and life safety systems
  • Ability to be adept with various tasks assigned with the goal of expanding Cx knowledge
  • Interpretation of HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Construction Drawings.
  • Interpretation of technical specifications, equipment cutsheets & catalog data
  • Prepare Field Energy Audit inspections

Client Management

  • Maintains a solid understanding of the main principles of MEP engineering and construction
  • Acquire and Maintain a commissioning professional certification

Continuing Education & Professional Development

  • Maintains a solid understanding of the main principles of MEP engineering and construction
  • Acquire and Maintain a current LEED NC Proficiency certification
  • Acquire and Maintain a commissioning professional certification

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Experience or Education in the Architectural Engineering Design or Construction Industry
  • Requires strong analytical and mathematical skills, quick thinking, and a solid understanding of the main principles of engineering, construction, and architecture
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, and Excel
  • Proficient in utilizing mobile devices in the field to collect and analyze data
  • Must be able to travel anywhere in the United States typically not more than one week per month outside Michigan.

Preferred

  • Student in Architectural Engineering, HVAC Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering Program at a University or College.
  • HVAC Equipment Service Technician
  • Electrical Journeyman or Apprentice
  • Building Automation System Technician
  • Testing, Adjusting & Balancing (TAB) Technician
  • Commissioning Professional Certification
  • Technical understanding of Electrical Systems, HVAC Systems, and/or Plumbing Systems
  • Proficient in the interpretation of construction drawings, technical specifications, submittals, and equipment data sheets as it relates to HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Systems.

Other considerations

  • Experience utilizing Revit MEP to produce BIM or construction drawings
  • Proficient in the interpretation of construction drawings, technical specifications, submittals, and equipment data sheets as it relates to HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Systems.
  • Proficient in the Commissioning Process ASHRAE Guidelines 0, 1, & 2
  • Associates degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology
  • Experience in Energy Modeling Software (Trace Load 700 & DOE2)
  • Understanding of the Commissioning Process per FGI, http://www.fgiguidelines.org/
  • Understanding of the application of mechanical and plumbing building codes, NFPA, & Healthcare Design Standards & Guidelines (AIA, FGI)
  • Experience in HVAC, Plumbing or Electrical Systems Engineering, including schematic design, design development, construction specification editing, and construction administration

Working Conditions

This position is a 40-hour work week. This position will be in a typical office setting most of the time and monthly on job sites as the project requires.

Physical Requirements

  • Sitting for long periods of time working on a computer
  • Standing or Walking for long periods of time at Project Sites/Facilities
  • Continual use of arms, hands, fingers, eyes, hearing, talking, and walking
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 25lbs
