BIM Specialist – Intern


This position is available in our Belmont, MI office.

Position Purpose

The BIM Drafter is a supporting role to a Design Project Engineer.  The Drafter will be trained to provide BIM Drafting and engineering support to all disciplines (mechanical, electrical, etc.,).  He/She will be required to develop BIM Models, with direction from a Design Engineer or Project Manager.

This team member will also assist in the sizing and selection of new HVAC, Electrical and/or Plumbing Building Systems.

Include, but not limited by the following:


  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by enforcing company procedures, procedures, and regulations;
  • Maintains project electronic files on the file server;
  • Execute all duties and responsibilities with professionalism; clear communication (written and verbal) skills, accountability;
  • Learn company work processes
  • Develop a basic knowledge in system design and testing, including but not limited to; air systems, hydronic systems, HVAC equipment and controls, plumbing equipment and controls, electrical equipment and controls, and life safety systems;
  • Promotes and maintains professional collaboration with the project team, including all engineering disciplines, equipment vendors, architects, contractors, construction manager and project client/owner;
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Project Execution

  • Ability to be adept with various tasks assigned with the goal of supporting the project team to meet daily and weekly objectives.
  • Develop the ability to Interpret HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Construction Drawings.
  • Develop the ability to Interpret of technical specifications, equipment cut sheets & catalog data;
  • Execute the production of Drawing Sets from Revit Models

Continuing Education & Professional Development

  • Develops a solid understanding of the main principles of MEP engineering and construction through Synergy Training Sessions and Vendor Training.



  • Experience or Education in the Architectural Engineering Design or Construction Industry or Student in Architectural Engineering, HVAC Technology, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering Program at a University or College.
  • Requires strong analytical and mathematical skills, quick thinking, and a solid understanding of the main principles of engineering, construction, and architecture;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, and Excel;
  • Proficient in utilizing mobile devices in the field to collect and analyze data
  • Desire to draft 3D building models of HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Systems.


  • Experience with 3D modeling software.
  • Experience utilizing Revit MEP to produce BIM or construction drawings;
  • Associates degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology;
  • HVAC Equipment Service Technician
  • Electrical Journeyman or Apprentice
  • Technical understanding of Electrical Systems, HVAC Systems, and/or Plumbing Systems
  • Proficient in the interpretation of construction drawings, technical specifications, submittals, and equipment data sheets as it relates to HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical Systems.

Other Considerations

  • Experience in Energy Modeling Software (Trace Load 700 & DOE2);
  • Understanding of the application of mechanical and plumbing building codes, NFPA, & Healthcare Design Standards & Guidelines (AIA, FGI);
  • Experience in HVAC, Plumbing or Electrical Systems Engineering, including schematic design, design development, construction specification editing, and construction administration;

Working Conditions

  • Average 40 hour work week (10-20 hrs for Interns that are full-time students)
  • Walking job sites and inspecting systems as the projects require.
  • Must be able to travel anywhere in the US, typically not more than one week per month
